Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Banko-Gutiti, fully washed process
Mandarin, brown sugar, passionfruit, florals
The town of Yirgacheffe in Southern Ethiopia is one of the best places in the world to source elegant, crisp, fully washed coffees. This is another one of those coffees, and one of the best we've tasted for a good long while.
Banko-Gutiti is situated about 35km south from Yirgacheffe town, in the sub-region of Kochere, right in the heartlands of the Ethiopia coffee-growing country. Supplied by approx 650 small holder farmers, who grow coffee at over 2,000m, the mill, which is owned Alemu Burkato, is investing in quality with the help of our friends Bire Abera and Teddy Yilak from BNT, one of the exporters we've worked with in the past.
This is one of the most delicious Ethiopian coffees we've tasted for ages - it's a complex heady mix of tropical fruit, rich sugars and mellow florals. We get mandarin, pineapple, passionfruit, peach, jasmine and honeysuckle. In espresso, it'll be rich, chewy, and bright. As filter, it'll be crisp, clean, moreish and wonderfully fruity, with all of those fruits there, and then some. As cafetière then the rich brown sugar will be there, along with some of the mandarin juiciness. It makes no difference how you brew it, this will put a smile on your face, and a swing in your step.
